English World - ORDER OF ADJECTIVES


 

  • When two or more adjectives are used before a noun, they normally go in the following order:
  1. opinion adjectives ( lovely, nice, beautiful)
  2. size (small, big, fat, thin)
  3. age  (old, young)
  4. shape  ( square, round)
  5. colour (blue, black, brown)
  6. origin (Chinese, French, German)
  7. material (wooden, marble)
  8. purpose (writing)


          ► It is a lovely, small, old, square, brown, Chinese, wooden, writing table.          

  •  When there are two or more adjectives of the same type, the more general adjective goes before the more specific.

            ► a kind, gentle lady

  • Present and past participles can be used as adjectives.

     

             ► The film was amusing.
             ► We were amused.

           

     

    • afraid, alike, alone, ashamed, asleep, content, ill, glad etc. are never followed by a noun.

             ► The students were ashamed of what they had done. 
    ( not the ashamed students)

    • Chief, eldest, former, indoor, inner, main, only, outdoor, principle, upper can only be used before nouns

             ► This is an indoor swimming pool. 
                 (not this swimming pool is indoor.)
